Hi everyone,

I,ve been to the dentist today with oliver, and i,m worried about his teeth. We brush them twice everyday but he has two on the top row that are damaged and they,re getting discoloured. i,d love to know if any of you have had concerns over the same thing and how you got on? Oliver was on antibiotics a lot last year and i have been told that they,re not good for the teeth. I know that the bottle during the night is,nt a good idea either, but when oliver was,nt eating much during the day, either after op,s or teething or chest infections, he,d want a bottle during the night, what i am doing though is watering it down a good bit. I,d love some tips , melanie

Hi Melanierw,
I'm no expert, but just a few thoughts. My advice would be try to change his night bottle to water as soon as you can - if you feel he does need a bottle in the night.
We went to the cleft talk on teeth last april and it was really helpful. The main points I can remember from it are
- Use toothpaste from age 2 and never childrens toothpaste, go straight to adults. It should have 1400 flouride in it. I had no idea what this meant at the time, but it's actually really easy to see if you read the toothpaste box. Sure enough, most childrens toothpastes seem to have about 1000 fluoride and most adults have 1400.
- They said sugar is the one and only cause of tooth decay, so keep our children away from sugar as much as possible.
- They said never drink juice throughout the day, just at mealtimes, as it has a lot of natural sugar. We also try to finish every meal or snack with a mouthful of water or milk just to rinse the food off her teeth a bit.
- I'm not sure how old Oliver is, but just to bear in mind they said start getting fissure sealants in the dentist as soon as they are old enough. I think that's from about age 7.
- They also said the enamel on the teeth of cleft children is generally not as strong as it could be so I suppose we just have to do what we can to keep it strong until the adult teeth can grow. They said drink tap water if possible, because the tap water in Ireland has added fluoride, and apparantly there is a big difference in dental cavaties between countries that don't add fluoride and those that do.
I think they were the main points, but if I remember anything else I'll shout!

Hi Emer,
Thank you for that information, it,s a great help to get advice from one another because we,re all at differant stages. Oliver is 21 mths now, and he,s got me running around after him all day , i,m trying to get him to drink through straws and cups at the moment, he,s so used to the haberman, he finds it comforting. I,ve noticed though that since he,s been drinking from differant cups and beakers, he,s been saying differant letters, so we,re delighted. The speech therapist told me last week that when oliver would,nt drink from anything else only the haberman, his mouth was using the same motion all the time and he was,nt encouraged to use differant parts of his mouth to make differant sounds. I never realised how much is involved in the whole process, mel
